We all recognize the famous cowboy hat of the West! But I bet you didn't know that it was designed on the East Coast! Yes, by a NJ boy!
The first cowboy hat was the “Boss of the Plains”, designed by John Stetson of New Jersey! He had been to the west and found that there was a need for a newly designed hat for the people migrating there. The bowler, derby and Mexican sombrero were just not cutting it. They were too warm and the brim was not wide enough to keep the sun off your head.
So, John returned home and opened his new business in Philadelphia!
Have you seen the movie, the Grand Budapest Hotel? It was released in 2014 and set in the Republic of Zubrowka – a fictional location. Although the hotel itself was never real and was actually just a model, numerous reviews of the hotel started popping up online! You can’t really stay there.
Do you know your state nickname? Some are very familiar to us – NY is the Empire State, California is the Golden State, Florida is the sunshine state. Here are some that might not be as familiar:
Kansas – Sunflower State
New Mexico – Land of Enchantment
Wyoming – The Equality State (now that’s timely!)
Louisiana – Pelican State
