Staying Active on a River Cruise

A river cruise is the ultimate way to see & explore the world in style, combining luxury, culture, wellness, and fitness!

Even while soaking up the views and indulging in local delicacies and delicious meals both on and off the ship, it’s easier than you may think to stay active on a river cruise.

From daily hikes to workout classes with an awesome view, here’s a look at some of the many ways to get your heart rate up while you sail away:

All about active activities

Not only do river cruise lines offer fitness classes and come equipped with modern gyms and state-of-the-art equipment, but wellness has also been naturally integrated into itineraries. Each day, there are a range of active excursion options to choose from, featuring activities like hiking and biking.

For example, on a Danube river cruise in Austria, you’ll have the option to bike from Melk to Spitz through the scenic Wachau Valley. In Germany, you can opt to trek to the Veste Oberhaus Fortress in Passau to get a bird’s eye view of where the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers come together. If you’re lucky, you’ll even get to see your boat pass by!

Stay fit on board

If you prefer to break a sweat on your own time, there are many complimentary workout classes offered throughout the day ranging from spinning to pilates to resistance band stretching and cardio. Some river cruise companies even have wellness hosts and ambassadors on board and offer lighter choice menu options.

What a view!

It’s also possible to stay active while admiring the views. Many ships have an outdoor track or offer classes in the great outdoors on the Sun Deck so you can Zumba while passing medieval castles. Warning, this may put your home gym to shame!

Run away, every day

If you prefer working out independently, you can hit the gym 24/7 or opt for a morning run. Since ships are docked in the heart of European cities, imagine having the streets to yourself somewhere new every day while you discover what these charming destinations have to offer.

Two wheels = twice the fun

Another great way to explore and stay active is by going for a bike ride. Most river cruise ships have a fleet of bicycles that are available to be taken out at leisure. As an added perk, you can also see a lot more of the destination on wheels than by foot. If you want to take this to the next level, there are also dedicated cycling cruises where passengers explore the countryside by bike every day.

Keep in mind that you will also be covering a lot of ground while merely walking through towns and villages, so you may even hit 10,000 steps a day without even trying.

And don't forget about the spa! Most river cruises have beautiful spas, offering services from massages, meditation, yoga & more!

The moral of the story is that it's possible to stay fit & healthy while traveling in style on a luxury river cruise! I'll be happy to answer all your questions and perhaps, start planning your next river cruise! Schedule you're free consultation now! (or just give me a call!)
